Introduction:
It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to this reading program in the N.P.C. Library-Information Centre. Reading Across Canada is a program challenging you to "Get Back to Books" and other print materials. Reading well and understanding what you read are two critical life-long learning skills. This program is designed to reintroduce you to the pleasure and joy of recreational reading while allowing you to hone your reading skills.
Participating in the Program
To participate in this challenge, you must register with me. The challenge will run until June. You will receive a tracking map on which you will record your achievements. Each province represents a goal level. After achieving each goal you will be rewarded with a prize and awarded a seal on your achievement certificate. Students participating in this challenge will also be considered as candidates for the N.P.C. Library Reader Award at the June Assembly.
How to Achieve Each Goal
Each province represents a goal level. One goal level = 3 - 5 novels (other books are considered as well, and due to length or complexity of the book may count more heavily than a novel - let's negotiate). One goal level may also be achieved by reading magazines and newspapers. For the purposes of this program, 5 magazines or newspapers based on 75% of the whole magazine or newspaper read, equals one book. Therefore, 25 magazines or newspapers or a combination thereof counts as goal achievement as well. Level 10 of the challenge = a total of 50 books or eqivalent. Bonus levels may be attained by adding 5 book equivalents for each of the three territories. The highest level which may be attained is Level 13.
How to Track and Verify Your Achievement
When you complete a book, magazine, newspaper, show it to the Teacher-Librarian. She will acknowledge your accomplishment and initial your tracking map. When a goal is achieved, the Teacher-Librarian will ensure that you receive the appropriate award and acknowledgement. In June, a final accounting will be made for all participants and final awards will be presented.
How Can You Register?
Come to the Library-Information Centre and ask the Teacher-Librarian for a tracking map and a registration card.
