Student Guide to Acceptable Use of Computers and the Internet

The use of the computer facilities (hardware, software, internet, and other components) is a privilege granted to the students of North Park Collegiate. Students must use these facilities in an acceptable way as determined by the staff of North Park Collegiate.

General Use

The computers in the school are to be used for the purpose of completing assigned school work.

Computer Labs

The acceptable use of the computers is governed by the teacher of each course. Students are to use the computers to complete the tasks assigned by the teacher.

Library Use

The computers available in the library are for research into topics suitable for an educational environment. Students wishing to use the computers for school work will have priority. Students are to use note taking sheets, or copy required information to a word processor to print information found using the internet or on-line databases.

Printers

Students must have teacher consent before printing. Students will be charged a fee per page for misuse. Students should avoid printing an excessive number of pages from the internet, printing multiple copies (surveys), and printing materials for personal use (resumes, flyers).

Unacceptable Uses

1. Computer: Students must not access the back of the computer, change monitor settings, deface the computer, mouse, or keyboard, open the computer or attempt to repair the computer.
2. Peripherals: Students are not permitted to connect other devices to the computer.
3. Software: Students are not permitted to download or install software.
4. Games: Students are not to play computer games (internet or software).
5. Music: Students are not to play music (CD or software).
6. Internet: Students may access only those sites related to their school work.
Students are not to attempt to by-pass the board filter.
Students are not to download / upgrade web browsers.
7. Email: Students are not permitted to send, receive, or check personal email.
8. Vandalism: Students are not to attempt to gain access to other computers, other parts of the school network, or other networks.
Students are not to alter the contents of any drive other than their own home drive.
9. Etiquette: Students are not to transmit, accept, or store information that contains swearing, racism, profanity, offensive material, content that is demeaning to other individuals, or other material that contradicts the Code of Behaviour.
10: Other Uses: Any use of the computer other than those outlined by the teacher.

Consequences for Unacceptable Use of Computers

Consequences for using the computers for purposes other than those permitted by a teacher may include detentions, in-school detentions, loss of computer privileges, suspension, and/or removal from courses.
