Our board uses a six day schedule for the whole school year. Listed below are things that are scheduled in on our class timetable for the year. The class likes to know when these things are happening. For Physical Education the children need to wear running shoes. On Library day they need to bring their library book to exchange for a new one. Check the class monthly calendar for the dates. Monthly calendars are sent home at the beginning of each month.

October News Dear Parents/ Guardians, September has passed very quickly. We have been very busy in class. It was a pleasure to meet those of you who came into the school for “Meet the Teacher Night”. For those of you who were unable to make it please know that you are welcome to come in and visit the class. Just give me a phone call or send a note and we can arrange a visit. Curriculum News In
Language Arts we are continuing to read “Critter” stories. We have written
our own Critter stories called “When I Get Bigger”. We have also made books
about ourselves. Most of the children know their birthdays, addresses and
phone numbers.
I still have a few children who need to work on learning this personal
information. This month we will be making a “Critter” community and we
will be talking about his extended family. Your child will need to bring
a small box to school to make their community building.
In
Social Studies we will be talking about community and extended family.
I will be sending a family tree home to be filled out. Please help your
child with this . We will also be talking about Hallowe’en and where this
custom originated.
In
Mathematics we are currently working on identifying number patterns in
the hundreds chart. We are learning how to count by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's
to 100. Please continue to practise these patterns at home. I will
be sending work home so that the children can practise these
counting patterns. Most of the children know the seasons and the days of
the week. Some still need to practise the months. This is harder because
there are twelve things to remember.
In
Science we are finishing our unit about “Air and Water”. The children will
be bringing home a book about weather which talks about air and water and
how they are related to our weather. Our next unit will be a unit on living
things. This should start about the middle of the month.
In
Healthy Living we are learning about the senses and the sense organs. Next
we will be learning about the internal organs and how they work. We are
completing a booklet about the body as we learn about it.
In
Drama Mrs. Hayward is doing activities to develop more independent problem
solving skills. The focus is on identifying the problem, identifying their
feelings when there is a problem and thinking of appropriate ways to solve
the problem independently.
The
children have not started their Music with Mrs. Berkeley yet. We wanted
to get each of our classes used to their own classroom procedures first.
We are however doing a reading buddies program each day. Grade one and
two students read with each other. This will help the students adjust to
changing classrooms and teachers. I will be teaching the Grade One students
computers when my class is doing Music. We should be ready to do this by
the middle of the month.
In Computers we have visited the Mercer Mayer Web Site. If you wish to visit it go to our class web page, click on search and look for the critter picture. Click on it and you will go to the Critter Web Site. Our class web page address is http://fc.gedsb.net/~kennedly
General Class Information
Please remember to refer to the calendar to determine if your child needs their running shoes for gym or needs to bring in their library book to exchange. I do have a few children who have not returned their library books. Please make sure your child returns their homework bag every day. Try and help them complete the assigned work. We will not be having a Hallowe’en Party. We will be having Hallowe’en Activities in the afternoon on October 29, 2004. The children do not wear their costumes to school for this. This way you will not have to worry about them getting torn or lost before they go trick or treating. I am
very pleased with how the children have been doing in Spelling. Keep up
the good work at home.
The
good apples for the month of September were Destiny, Martin, Caleb, Mitzi,
Bethany, Will and Gary. These children were selected because they are completing
their class work on time, listening carefully during lessons and completing
all their homework. They have also received Groovy Awards!
Please
call or send me a note if you have any concerns. Notes can be put in homework
bags. It is important that we work together to make this a successful year
for your child . Call me if you have any concerns. If you call during school
hours I will usually try to get back to you after class. At lunchtime and
recess I am often on duty and cannot always call you.
Don’t
forget your child can win colour house points. The colour house with
the most points gets a treat. Sign the coupon, cut it out and send it back
to me and I will give your child 50 colour house points. Any comments or
suggestions!! Write them on the coupon.
Don’t
forget “Walk to School Day” is October 6, 2004. See attached flyer.
Dental screening is this month. I sent letters home about this process.
