This page contains a description of the objectives,  the activities and the resources for the Storywriting Web Quest based on the Franklin books by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clarke.

Objectives:
  • The children will listen to and discuss stories about Franklin and his family and friends. They will focus on identifying the beginning, middle and ending of each story. They will identify the different problems Franklin encounters in each book and how he solves them. The teacher and the class will make class charts with this information on them.
  • The children will learn that the Internet can be used as a research tool.
  • They will learn how the author Paulette Bourgeois and the illustrator Brenda Clarke got their ideas for the Franklin stories by visiting Web Sites that have information about the author and the illustrator. They will write some facts they learned about the author and the illustrator and share this information with the class.
  • The children will have an opportunity to browse some Internet Web Sites with Franklin and his friends. They will go to the Internet Web Sites and complete the assigned activities with their partner. They will make a list of Franklin's friends and give a brief description of each.  This information will be shared with the class.
  • The children will learn how to make a story plan. They will then use their story plan to write their own Franklin story. They will learn about the editing  and publishing processes involved in storywriting. They will publish their final copy in a word processing program. They will then print their story and share it with the class.
  • The children will  be expected to work cooperatively in small groups and with the whole class to complete some of the activities.
